Best way to monitor servers that are not domain joined

Couple questions here that we are trying to figure out the easiest way to do.  I need to monitor a bunch of webservers that are not domain joined is there an easy way to setup one set of credentials to use for these in Solarwinds or will I have to make separate logins for each server?  I do plan on installing the IIS SAM monitor on these as well but wanted to check if there was an easy way to make one set of credentials work for multiple web servers.   Thanks!

Linux Agent

Hello all,

I am interested in using the agent instead of NET-SNMP and I've noticed a few differences regarding information, such as the agent pulling OS version for me.  I've also noticed on a linux-agent monitored node I am able to see disk queue length, but on my snmp machine I can not.  I believe monitoring with the agent will continue collecting data if the node loses connection with my poller?  I also read where aLTeReGo said in a post the Linux agent monitoring of memory utilization is far more accurate than NET-SNMP.  I think i have also read you do not need to mess with OiDs when using the linux agent?  Assuming this is all true, I am interested in this.  On a side note, it seems to only use a bit less than 30 megs of memory as well, has anyone observed more?  I'm only testing it on one machine atm.

My big question is, is there a list of pros/cons to using linux agent vs snmp monitoring?  This is something I would have to get SysAdmins on board with for it to happen.  Thank you!

Configure button for AppInsight for IIS on Orion server not working.

When I try to hit the configure button, I get the attached error message.

When I open powershell as administrator (which it requires), I can run get-website, and it shows everything. Is the problem that the WebAdministration module requires elevated privileges?

AS2 Servers getting hung without realizing

Hey guys, the AIX team had a unique issue happen yesterday.  Their AS2 server which supports SAP got hung up randomly yesterday.  The IP address being polled was still pingable so Solarwinds didn't report anything.  Is there anyway to make solarwinds execute a job on a server to see if it passed to test functionality of the server?  We run VMAN and SAM in our environment.

Question on License Limit

I have a A300 SAM license. When I go to Orion Platform Details from settings, I see the following information under Network Elements

Total Count : 383

Nodes: 108

Interfaces: 7

Volumes: 268

But when I navigate to License Details, under Orion, I see the following details.

Nodes currently monitored: 108

Total nodes in license:  300

Volumes currently monitored: 268

Total volumes in license:  300

Under SAM, I see the following details.

Allowed Number of Component Monitors 300

Total Number of Component Monitors 249

Licensed Component Monitors 249

Unlicensed Component Monitors 0

Available Component Monitors 51

I am a little confused. So, does this mean I have exceeded the license limit and have run out of resources already or I can still add more nodes / volumes / components / interfaces for monitoring? Can any one please explain?

Also, while adding some nodes I got a warning that "Node was imported successfully. Additional objects may not be monitored due to license limit.". I saw these for many nodes. Once I added these nodes, I also removed some other nodes. After that I got the above statistics. Now, will the additional objects be monitored for those nodes for which there were warnings before or I need to configure them explicitly again? Please help.

Tape Backups Job Status PowerShell Monitor Fails - Veeam Backup SAM Template

Our Veeam Backup runs 4 jobs as shown below. I have applied the out-of-the-box Veeam Backup SAM template and duplicated the PowerShell component monitor for each of the 4 jobs. I have entered the Job names in the script arguments and the 'Daily Backup' and 'Weekly Backup' are working correctly. However the 'Daily to tape' and 'Weekly to tape' jobs do not work with the script. I was wondering if there is a difference or limitation of Tape backup jobs compared to VMware backup jobs. From the screen shot of the table below, the different Job types both have a 'Status' and 'Last Result' - which is what the PowerShell monitor is returning.

Veeam Backup Jobs

See below screen shot of output from testing the component monitors - one has argument 'Daily Backup' the other 'Daily to tape' they succeed and fail respectively.

I have tried entering the argument as Daily to tape, 'Daily to tape', "Daily to tape", for the scripts that run successfully the argument does not include quotation marks. The script itself uses arg[0] as job name - see attached out-of-the-box script for ease of access (jobstatus.txt).

Many Thanks,

Jackson

Configure Monitoring for OS X Sierra machine

I need to configure monitoring for a Mac OS X Sierra (10.12.3) machine. For this, I came to know that I have to configure SNMP v2 on the Mac VM. I tried following the steps given in the SolarWinds blog below, but looks like hostconfig no longer exists in the newer versions of Mac. I am not getting much help with this. Can anyone please help me and provide the detailed steps to configure SNMP v2 on Mac OS X Sierra (10.12.3) so that I can enable monitoring on this virtual machine?

Linux Agent Deployment

Linux Agent Deployment

Add Node Wizard - Push Deployment

Deploying the Linux Agent to an individual machine is as simple as adding the node to Orion via the Add Node Wizard. To begin, navigate to [Settings -> All Settings -> Add Node], enter the IP address or fully qualified host name of the Linux host you'd like managed in the "Polling Hostname or IP Address" field, and select the "Windows Servers: Agent" radio button from the available "Polling Method" options. Next, enter the credentials that will be used to both connect to the Linux host and install the agent software. The credentials provided here should have 'root' or equivalent level permissions. Note that the credentials provided here are used only for initial deployment of the agent. Future password changes of the account credentials provided here will have no impact on the agent once it is deployed.

The Agent is deployed to the Linux host using a combination of SSH and SFTP requiring TCP port 22 be open from the Orion server (or additional polling engine) to the Linux endpoint you wish to manage for push deployment to function properly.

Agent Deployment Add Node.png

Once credentials are provided click "Next" at the bottom of the page. You will then be prompted to start the installation of the Linux Agent. Click "Start Install" and the progress indicator will appear. When finished, you will be taken through the rest of the Add Node Wizard flow where you can select which resources you wish to monitoring on the host.

Manual - Pull Deployment

In some scenarios it may not be possible for the Orion server to push the agent to the Linux host over SSH. This is not uncommon when the host you wish to manage resides behind a NAT or is hosted in the cloud. While firewall policy changes, port forwarding, or one-to-one address translations could be made to facilitate push deployment of the agent, in many cases it may be far easier to perform a manual deployment of the agent to those hosts.

The Linux Agent can be downloaded from the Orion web interface to the Linux host by going to [Settings -> All Settings -> Agent Settings -> Download Agent Software] and selecting "Linux" from the options provided and clicking "Next". In the following step of the Wizard select "Manual Install" and click "Next". Finally, In the third and final step of the wizard is where you will select the Linux distribution you will be installing the Agent on, as well as bitness of the OS (32 or 64bit). Here you can also configure any advanced options the agent will use when it is installed, such as which polling engine the Agent should be associated with in Agent Initiated (Active) mode, or the listening port the Agent will use when running in Server Initiated (Passive) mode.

Select Agent TypeSelect Deployment MethodChoose Agent Settings & Distribution
Select Agent Type.pngAgent Deployement Type.pngAgent Distribution.png

Once selecting all the appropriate configuration options, click the "Generate Command" button at the bottom of the page. This will generate a dynamic installation command based upon the the settings chosen above, which can then be copied and pasted into an SSH or X-Windows session on the Linux host. The Linux machine will then download and install the appropriate agent software from the Orion server using those pre-configured options.

Copy Install Command.png

Paste the generated command into your Linux terminal session and press 'enter' to start the download and install process.

Console Session Install Agent.pngThe command will begin downloading, then installing the Agent onto the machine. When complete, the agent service will automatically start on the Linux host registering with the Orion server, and becoming a managed node.

Mass Deployment - Repository

With the introduction of the Linux Agent in SAM 6.3 Beta 3, the Orion server and Additional Web Servers are now also Linux repositories for the Agent. This method can be utilized for mass Agent deployment using automation and orchestration tools such as Puppet and Chef. It also means you can use the same native built-in  package management tools for the Agent, as you would any other package on the Linux operating system. Now you can install the Linux Agent the same way you might install or update BIND or Apache, using 'yum', 'apt-get', or 'zypper' depending upon your distribution. To utilize 'yum', 'apt-get', or 'zypper' for installing the agent you must first register the Orion repository with your operating system. To do so, navigate to [Settings -> All Settings -> Agent Settings -> Download Agent Software -> Linux] and select 'Install via Package Management Tool (e.g. yum, apt)'.

yum.pngBased upon the distribution selected in the drop down (1), a command line string is dynamically generated. Simply click the 'Copy' button (2), then paste this string into an SSH session for the Linux host you want to add the repository to and press 'Enter'. Once the repository is added to the host, you can use the appropriate 'yum', 'apt-get', or  'zypper' command to install the agent from the repository.  Simply click the 'Copy' button (3) and once again, paste this command into the SSH session to install the Agent. The Agent will then be downloaded from the Orion repository and installed on the host.

When installation is complete, all that remains is to configure the agent by typing 'service swiagentd init'. This will bring up the Linux Agent configuration settings where you will need to provide the IP, hostname, or FQDN of the Orion server or Additional Polling Engine (option #2). Then enter your Orion 'admin' or equivalent credentials used to login to the Orion web interface (Options 4 & 5). When complete, save your changes and exit (Option 7). This will then register the agent with the Orion server and begin managing it as a node.

Using Linux/Unix Script Monitor to parse CURL output - McAfee EPO template

I'm trying to get Orion Linux/Unix Script Monitor to parse a CURL output.  I have the bash command to get the output, what I can't seem to do is make Orion see the Message Statistic fields at the end of the script.  I need someone to tell me what I'm missing.

First my CURL statement, and the output I get on my Linux box, command first and output right after:

[USER@SERVER tmp]$ x=`curl -s -k -u user:'password' 'https://192.168.1.1:8443/remote/core.executeQuery?target=DC_VW_OSS_STATUS&select=(select%20DC_VW_OSS_STATUS.AvgReqProcessTime)&where=(eq%20DC_VW_OSS_STATUS.IPAddress%20"10.100.31.59")' | grep Average` printf "Message:AvgScan:\n";printf "\t$x" | awk -F: {'print $1'} | printf "Statistic:AvgScan:\t";y=`echo "$x" | awk -F: {'print $2'} |  tr -d '\015'`;printf "\t$y\n"

Message:AvgScan:

Statistic:AvgScan:               0.017518

What Orion tells me when I run this script:

NDGet Output Failed:  Invalid script output. Unable to parse 'Statistic' as number

I'm all but convinced, at this point, that I simply am not outputting the "Message / Statistic" fields right.  Can someone good with creating templates help?

I need to create a template to include a service monitor which stays green when not running and red when running.   How would you do that? I don't see any option available in my SAM 6.5.

Windows Event Log Monitoring in a nested log directory

I am trying to alert on an specific event ID in the Microsoft\Exchange\HighAvailability\Operational log.  Thus far, I have not had any luck with the syntax.

In the Template, there is a place to select the "Log to Monitor", and so I choose custom.  I have tried Microsoft-Exchange-HighAvailability\Operational (the way it appears in the Event Viewer), Microsoft\Exchange\HighAvailability\Operational, Microsoft-Exchange-HighAvailability-Operational, but none return any data.

Any sage advice?

One of my esxi server's HDD failed and I recive error and change the HDD .

But problem start after that. Error gone from server ilo and vcenter health monitor but in Solarwinds HDD sensor still failed.

Disable and enable the sensor from SAM was useless.

Even I remove and add specific server again.

There is no error log even in server ilo.

So tell me what should I do?
