DFS lacking info...

$

So this might be a silly question but shouldn't the canned SAM DFS template show replication taking place and any issues?  I'm not seeing anything really showing up other than green status for everything... I know replication is happening because i am able to see it in NTA..(netflow)  But when i go into sam, darned if i can see any sign that its taking place.  Whats the purpose of SAM if it can't show me this info?

Maybe there is something more i need to configure to get this type of information?

Here's my setup...  Server 2012R2  DFS Namespace and Replication is configured to run 24/7 between two file servers.

SAM version is 6.2.2

A few things i get no information on are:

Replication folders: conflict space in use

Replication folders: deleted space in use

Replication folders: staging space in use

Replication folders: updates dropped

Replication folders: File installs retried

I get no status for any of these...  Am i missing a configuration step somewhere?

During the setup i did test to ensure the account was able to poll for all of the information in the template and it was successful.

thanks in advance..

Configuring "Windows Event Log Monitor" alerting

What is the correct way to configure Windows Event Log Monitor alerting, making it as generic as possible? E.g. I'd like to get an email any time there's an error, and to include the text of the error in the email.

At the moment, we have generic "Application down" and "Component down" alerts. By default they do not include the ${WindowsEventMessages} value - and probably shouldn't, as it's specific to Windows Events logs.

Does this mean I need to separate my "component down" alerts into two: for Windows Event logs, and for all others?

Would someone be willing to post a screenshot of your trigger conditions for the Windows Event Monitor alerts? I imagine it'll be something like this?

TIA.

Error when installing Orion Agent, "provisioning has failed" error code 0x5 Access is Denied

We have been experiencing issues when trying to deploy the Orion Agent (for SAM use).

The following error occurs when the agent deployment fails:

"Agent connected to PAS but provisioning has failed, error code [0x5] - Access is denied. : Failed to create certificate"

2015-07-14 08_36_49-Store.png

The only way to see this error is to remotely connect to the host, launch the Control Panel then view the Orion Agent Settings, and manually enter the connection settings.

In addition to the agent installation failing, the same agent/node consistently keeps on trying to register and displays duplicate entries every few minutes in Manage Agents as shown in the example below:

2015-07-14 08_41_40-Manage Agents.png

How many duplicate entries occur you might ask? About 100 per day. The only way to stop the duplicate entries from showing up in the Manage Agents screen is to remotely connect to the target PC then manually remove the agent software from Programs and Features.

Facts:

  • The SolarWinds poller server and each target host on the domain we intend to deploy the agent have the same time/date and are joined to the same AD domain.
  • The credentials used by SolarWinds have local administrator rights to the target PCs and SolarWinds is able to poll the target PCs using WMI without issue.
  • Network communication between the SolarWinds Poller servers and the agents are NOT blocked by any firewall -- SolarWinds is able to PING the target computers.

What we have tried:

1) Reboot the PC, same error occurs.

2) Delete the node from SolarWinds, delete the agent from the admin dashboard, then manually reinstall the agent on the PC and manually enter the connection settings. The same issue occurs.

3) Delete the node from SolarWinds, uninstall the agent from the PC, reboot the PC, delete all duplicate agents from the admin dashboard, wait about 5 minutes, then attempt and start all over again.

We have now seen this same issue several times. This issue seems to be random because we are able to deploy the agent without any issues to many other computers on our network. But this is now the 5th time we've seen this error over the past month.

I'm going to try to add in the agent via SERVER INITIATED mode and see what happens... standby.

Dell Precision workstations health sensors

So, I have been configuring a newly installed SAM and NPM installation to monitor the systems on my network. I have had a lot of fun figuring out SNMP rules for the firewall to allow Dell's OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) to send hardware health sensors to SAM so that I can keep an eye on everything. Everything went smoothly, until yesterday. Yesterday I started adding the last network segment to SAM, which happens to be 3 R320 servers and 9 Precision R7610 rack server/workstations.

First, I had to find that the OMSA will not install on the precision R7610 in a Windows 7 environment, but Dell does provide a Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation Application (OMCIA) which provides the SNMP responses for most of the hardware health sensors. These particular systems use an integrated LSI RAID controller... which apparently SAM does not see disk-drive health on. I can see Fan status, Power Supply, Temperature, Memory, Intrusion detection, and CPU status, but not the health of the two drives in a Raid-1 configuration in each system.

Apparently, somewhere in the SNMP responses is the status of these drives, and I am hoping someone knows how to configure SAM to see these drives, preferably as a hardware health sensor, but I would settle for a Poller or anything else that I can somehow flag to be watched. I am still learning the basics of SNMP as it is not something I have dealt with in any kind of in depth manner, so I am hoping someone might have already solved this or would be willing to assist.

Any ideas?

AppInsight SQL Alerts

Configuring AppInsight for so many servers with different needs is really challenging when I cannot override or disable these monitors easily.

Why is this template so inflexible and so difficult to control?

How can I create alerts for Appinsight SQL for specific component types?

In other words, I want an Appinsight monitored server to give me alerts only on the WMI process types within the template. I cannot select a component type.

Aer you guys doing anything to help alleviate the painful customization options or lack thereof with this template?

Its truly a PITA with so many SQL servers in place for many different clients with many different needs.

I can do all of this so simply with SCOM, someone show me how AppInsight can be customized on a per server basis, and disable any of the monitors at will. Nevermind, I already asked in the past and the answer was you cannot (love how the override template flashes the disable/enable box, then suddenly disappears). We lose so much not using SCOM for SQL, I simply do not see how Appinsight gives me any control over the unwieldy noisy monitors and views. This is not a "SCOM VS SolarWinds" rant, its simply the truth. Appinsight is quite simply mega difficult to control, configure and apply. Someone tell me I am wrong and show me how SQL Appinsight can be tweaked and customized with ease.

If I just have to create 100 different templates for 100 different servers, then Microsoft truly does win in this feature comparison. Sorry to say the M and S word, but I am losing patience with monitoring SQL for 100 servers with differing needs. What I was able to do easily with SCOM I cannot at all do with SW. My other thread with the macro issue also makes us wonder if SW is the best solution for app monitoring.

How to monitor a web site with login prompt?

I am trying to create an application monitor that will check a web page that has a windows login prompt on it. Unfortunately, this is not a simple forms-based login, so none of the component monitors seem to be working (HTTP Monitor or HTTPS form login Monitor) .

I also tried looking at building my own with PowerShell, using the "Invoke-WebRequest" commandlet, and that won't do it either (because of the login prompt).

How can I make a simple web page test that will enter the credentials when prompted?

Thanks

Hello all. I am wondering if we can configure a remote SAM poller to look to the SQL DB on a different port than 1433? We are running this in the cloud and I need to connect back to SQL.

There are countless important inventions. Only ten are allowed here, so...I know you lot are creative, and I did only play the basics so... (I voted for cuticle remover. Why? Because the cuticle is that piece of skin that starts at the base of your fingernail and you then tear back until it reaches your elbow. Yuck!) GAME ON!

Orion and TLS 1.2?

$

Is it possible to force Orion to use TLS 1.2?  This morning I tried disabling TLS 1.0 and 1.1 on my Orion Web Server and only having TLS 1.2 enabled and this broke communication.  I am not sure if this means I also need to force TLS 1.2 on my Core server and that would work or if Orion just doesn't support TLS 1.2?

Please advise, any feedback would be very appreciated!

HTTP Monitor - 503 is UP

Is there a way to change the HTTP application monitor to report UP if HTTP 503 is returned?

In my situation, the monitor is testing www.netflix.com and HTTP 503 means that our URL filtering is working correctly.

I've seen other mentions of accomplishing this using powershell, but haven't been able to find real examples or documentation.

Thanks!

Quick query, Hoping that someone might know the answer to this one.

I have a server with 4 cp's. is it possible to set customer thresholds on each cpu and trigger an alert if 1 of those hits the threshold. Currently I see if done as an average across the 4 cpus but needed to be notified if 1 cpu or more is having a problem
