Agent Monitoring and SNMP Component Checks?

I've looked through the docs but can't seem to find any good information on this. We have currently started to deploy agents to various areas on the network that are either behind a firewall or remotely hosted. We happen to have an application monitor that polls SNMP for some application specific data. This data does not seem to be able to be obtained via any other method. When attempting to run a SNMP component type against a node with an agent polling method I get the following response:

SNMP is not supported on this node. For more information, see "Promoting an ICMP Only Node to SNMP" in the "Using Orion System Manager" chapter of the SolarWinds SAM Administrator Guide.

Does anyone know if this is this the expected behavior in this scenario? I was hoping that the agent would be smart enough to try to initiate the SNMP check against localhost, pull the data, and send it back (much like it does with WMI).
