Most Common Templates Used in SAM

$

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to know what are the most common templates you folks use when using SAM.  Let's say for VMs, what would be most commonly used?  What templates are most commonly used for any app being monitored?

How can I check what Template was used for an Existing Node being Monitored in SAM?

I would like to add a node into SAM but I don't know what template to use.  There is already an existing node that is similar to the one I want to add but I don't know what template was used.  How do I check for this?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Testing SNMP on multiple Nodes

Hi,

I have to change polling engine for around 200 nodes, and for each node i have to manually test SNMP and then change the polling engine.

Is there a way via which i could test that SNMP is enabled for all those nodes and that polling engine is able to receive the same in a go.

Doing is manually for each and every device on-by-one is a time-consuming task and i am in a need to have a better approach for it.

General SAM Questions Involving WMI

Greetings Thwack,

I hope this is the correct place to post these "new guy" questions.  I've recently been handed SAM to replace SCOM with the caveat of WMI only (I already attempted the Orion Agent pitch to no avail).  I keep easily getting lost in the training videos and documentation and I believe I've searched the right areas.  I will continue digging and I am not trying to "cop out," I've just found product forums to be more direct.  I do apologize for my "newness" and thank you for your time.

Current Requirements:

WMI only, single / very limited port range, and non-administrator WMI.  All of which I have documentation on.

Generic (Drive%, up/down, certificate lifespan, services down).

Anyway, concerning WMI:

1.  There are some community templates that have "WMI - Only" in the title, am I correct in assuming these are the ones I should be seeking out as per my requirements?

2.  Assuming I cannot find pre-made templates that fit my requirements, should I start researching strings and build my own?  Are there good programs for this or is MSDN (seems incredibly vast) the place to be?

Hardware Health monitor issue

Hi

I have a problem with hardware health monitor.

My vcenter added to my NPM 11.5 and SAM 6.2.

One of my esxi server's HDD failed and I recive error and change the HDD .

But problem start after that. Error gone from server ilo and vcenter health monitor but in Solarwinds HDD sensor still failed.

Disable and enable the sensor from SAM was useless.

Even I remove and add specific server again.

There is no error log even in server ilo.

So tell me what should I do?

Can solarwinds monitor Superdome hardware?

Hi Folks,

Interested to know if solarwinds can monitor Superdome hardware.

Monitor the disk for highly used directories?

We have a few jumpboxes that are used to access some client environments which is being used by 10-20 people. Is it possible to monitor the disk for directories that have high disk utilization? e.g Someone uses 100GB vs everyone else.

If not, is it possible to monitor for a spike in directory size? e.g a folder went up by 100GB (guess this the same thing?)

190K elements to monitor

Hello,

Phase one of elements to monitor is 190K  and second phase is another 190K

I will looking at the architecture now. From what I see, I will need 3 main Orion servers with NPM, NCM.  etc.

Orion 1  will have 10 pollers with their 10 HAs ,

Orion 2   will also have 10 pollers with their 10 HAs

Orion 3 also will have 10 pollers with their 10 HAs

I will need EOC for this to be able to view the 3 environments.

Now, here  are my questions:

Is it feasible that way ?  I know that solarwinds has some limits....

Can solarwinds monitor over all these almost 400K elements?

Let me know if it has been tested and the right way to do this.

Thanks,

AppInsight for SQL application status on a Failover Cluster Instance

I have configured AppInsight for SQL to monitor two of our Failover Cluster Instances (FCI's).  These FCI's comprise of two nodes, 01a and 01b, connected to a common LUN (network storage space).  The sql server agent and sql server service will be running on whichever node is active, and stopped on the other node.

Why would application availability appear as "Critical" on a clustered instance?  The other standalone instance we have also shows application availability as "Critical", so is this a bug in AppInsight for SQL?

Thanks,

Mike

• Server Recovery: If any SolarWinds Server (on which Control M Alert configured) goes down, how to avoid outage in this situations.

Hi All,

Server Recovery: If any SolarWinds Server (on which Control M Alert configured) goes down, how to avoid outage in this situations. We have created VIP (In F5) but due to delay and missing alerts, we have not applied in Production. So, I want to know, do we have set up through which we can bounce the control M Trap messages/Alert on different servers of the Solarwinds?

now i am in a situation where i am not able to identify the devices between router and switch. I know this is a switch and this one is a router, but i am not able to find a field or identifier which says yes this one is router and this one switch in solar winds Database.

Can someone please help me on that?

Creating Custom views for multiple servers running the same application

Sorry new to this but I'm having a time trying to figure out how to go about setting up a view or multiple views to do see certain counters from a application monitor from multiple servers.

I'll try to explain it more with this example:   memcached application monitor on servers A, B & C

I want a view that I can bring up (possibly from a menu bar) that show all 3 servers with say Memory Usage, Missed gets, Evictions as examples for all 3 so I can quickly compare how each server is preforming.   Not looking for alerts or anything just a performance type view based on a single application that contains the informtion form multiple servers\devices.   Is there a class or documentation on how to go about doing this ?

It seems that several views might be needed where 1 view (detail) would be embedded into another view (summary).  But I'm just really not sure on how the structure is setup.

Thanks

Disk Volume Percent Used in Critical State (Red) isn't reflected in at the node level indicator

I have a server disk volume which the volume percent used is up at 97%. When I look at the console home page where the nodes are listed, the server indicator is green. Not until I drill down to the view [Node Details > Vital Stats] would I see there is an issue.  And the volumes listed under AppStack is also green so it doesn't show any issue. However if I mouse-over the volume in AppStack, the drive space used bar is red.

Capture3.PNG

The problem is server admins would not see the issue from the console and they would have to rely on the first alert notification to discover the situation. One would think the server is completely fine. Not until one drill down to each node would see an issue.

There are couple things I like to see:

1. Can I rollup the drive health state (warning or critical) to the node so it's health indicator would reflect the drive state?

2. Is there a way I can create a similar view to the top page so our server admin has a view of all the server drives in warning or critical.

Thanks

Use SAM to monitor an Exchange Mailbox

Can we monitor an email box using SAM to make sure the emails located in the inbox are NOT "new" longer than 3 hours?

Is it possible to create an application dependency that points directly to a database?

In the application dependency mapping, is it possible to map an application directly to a specific database, or is it only capable of mapping to the SQL instance? All the DBs on the TEST instance are visible in SAM.

ie. SQL Instance name is TEST with several DBs on the TEST instance. An application on a separate node utilizes a DB named APPDB under the TEST instance, but the app mapping only maps the application/node to the TEST instance, and not it's corresponding DB, APPDB.

Error in alert "Unexpected Error Occurred. Out of memory"

We've been experiencing a strange error with one of our monitored applications.

Our alert rule states to fire an email when the state of this application is NOT "Up". So an alert email notification will trigger even if the monitor is in an "Unknown" state.

Inside the alert rule we include the component status message. In this instance we see the following in the alert notification:

The monitor on NODE05 is Unknown for the following reason:

Unexpected error occurred. Out of memory

Alert was triggered at Monday, December 5, 2016 9:54 PM.

A few minutes later the alert resets and the APM monitor works normally for several hours before this happens again.

I found the APM logs for this particular application and have these entries:
