Monitor if a directory folder is accessible or not???? Help Please!

Hello fellow Thwack Heads.

I am hoping someone could help me here. I have been tasked with seeing if there is a way to monitor if a directory folder is accessible or not.

I have looked over Thwack for suggestions and have found some but nothing that is clean and will give me what I actually need. I am hoping someone has an idea or a way of accomplishing what I'm looking to do.

We basically own all SW products with the exception of LEM but I do not think an event log is created when a directory becomes inaccessible but maybe I'm wrong on that.

To clarify what I'm trying to do; I want to monitor with hopefully S.A.M or another SW product if a specific folder that an application resides in and that Citrix pulls the application from is accessible or not. I have already set-up monitors for if the services and processes are running or not but they would also like to see if a folder is able to be accessed or not. T:\APPS\RAIVLiq\rightangle.exe

I would than also do this for other directories as well;

Any thoughts or idea's on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

IP Address for the host '' is missing.

I have been trying to add a few nodes to SolarWinds SAM 6.4. I am using a domain user. I am able to add other nodes from the same domain into SW SAM using the same domain user, but for some nodes, it is not working. In the logs, I see this error. IP Address for the host '<hostname>' is missing. This user is already part of a Domain Admin group, because of which I am able to add other nodes using this user. But, I am able to remote login to those machines (with problems) using the same user. Also, I have added this user to the Administrators group on these machines explicitly, but it didn't help. I also tried turning off the firewall on these machines. But that also didn't help. Can anyone please help?

DHCP user experience monitor - does Sender Adapter IP Address do anything?

I am trying to set up DHCP user experience monitors for two DHCP servers. One seems fine, but the other one is getting: Unknown or unsupported probe type SolarWinds.APM.Probes.DhcpUserExperienceProbe. It's using the exact same Application Monitor.

The monitor that is working is using the main ip address for the polling server and has that ip address specified in the monitor set up as the Sender Adapter IP Address. The one that doesn't work is using an ip address assigned to a second NIC as the Sender Adapter IP Address. The reason for two NICs is because the subnet that the polling server is on is only served by one of the servers.

Linux monitoring script stopped working

A couple of days ago a Linux monitoring script stopped working (Server Clock Drift (Perl)). Now it's returning error:

Script file creation failed. -bash: cat: command not found

Checked permissions on the folder, no new server updates, no resource issues, no drive space issues, restarted the server, tried another poller, deleted the template/added it back to the server, deleted the server out of solarwinds all together, waited 20-30 minutes then added it back and still the same error. Anyone have any ideas?

Is VoIP, IP-Video, Application sharing sessions or SIP trunk new IT challenge?

$

As people trying to be more productive they use new ways how to communicate and collaborate. VoIP is still one of the most important tools people use when talking to people, but it's instant messaging, application webcast, IP-video, conference calls or VoIP via web-based clients like Lync that may cause headache to IT.

Are these new technologies and communication channels like Lync, cloud webcasts - Citrix, GoTo Meeting or VoIP as SaaS, new challenge for IT? Is it easy to maintain and deliver high quality and availability or it's a IT's nightmare?

Network Discovery....

Hi everybody. In looking at the various way to add nodes to SAM for monitoring I was wondering if there is a way to not just import the node but to bring along some detailed information... i.e, Contacts, location ect. and populate the corresponding fields in the custom property section. Hopefully I made sense. Thanks for response.

Variable Question - SAM And NPM

Hello,

Trying to use the following variable, from a custom configuration file.

<OID OID="1.3.6.1.4.1.11307.10.1006" MIB="SNMPv2-SMI" Name="enterprises.11307.10.1006" Value="Application.Node.Caption: ${N=SwisEntity;M=Application.Node.Caption} Node.Caption: ${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.Caption} Caption: ${N=SwisEntity;M=Caption} NodeName: ${NodeName}" DataType="64" ValueName="Application.Node.Caption: ${N=SwisEntity;M=Application.Node.Caption} Node.Caption: ${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.Caption} Caption: ${N=SwisEntity;M=Caption} NodeName: ${NodeName}" HexValue=""></OID>

My questions/issues are, when an alert is generated and that information gets passed to our CA Spectrum system, anything for the Application Monitor will not populate the nodename request.   However, anything for the actual NODE alerts value will pass over the Node variable, with no issues.  When the first alerting method occurs, then our CA Spectrum system seems to not recognize anything with APM.Application as critical, and an SDR (ticket) will not get generated.  Is there something in the variable information causing this?  Or is it possible, we are passing too much information for the system to understand?  Or are those variables actually wrong for the S.A.M. side?   And if the last question is correct, then where do we find the correct list for the application monitors variables?

Is it possible to run two different template files for NPM related events and SAM related events?  Or because some SAM events are node related, that can cause a possible conflict with the correct information being passed through the alert information via the SNMP trap file?

I have attached two pictures, as examples of what (as a team) we are seeing for the alert information.

If anyone, has any insight into this problem/issue?   And can provide some valuable feedback, that would be greatly appreciated.

Linux Agent Deployment

Add Node Wizard - Push Deployment

Deploying the Linux Agent to an individual machine is as simple as adding the node to Orion via the Add Node Wizard. To begin, navigate to [Settings -> All Settings -> Add Node], enter the IP address or fully qualified host name of the Linux host you'd like managed in the "Polling Hostname or IP Address" field, and select the "Windows Servers: Agent" radio button from the available "Polling Method" options. Next, enter the credentials that will be used to both connect to the Linux host and install the agent software. The credentials provided here should have 'root' or equivalent level permissions. Note that the credentials provided here are used only for initial deployment of the agent. Future password changes of the account credentials provided here will have no impact on the agent once it is deployed.

The Agent is deployed to the Linux host using a combination of SSH and SFTP requiring TCP port 22 be open from the Orion server (or additional polling engine) to the Linux endpoint you wish to manage for push deployment to function properly.

Once credentials are provided click "Next" at the bottom of the page. You will then be prompted to start the installation of the Linux Agent. Click "Start Install" and the progress indicator will appear. When finished, you will be taken through the rest of the Add Node Wizard flow where you can select which resources you wish to monitoring on the host.

Manual - Pull Deployment

In some scenarios it may not be possible for the Orion server to push the agent to the Linux host over SSH. This is not uncommon when the host you wish to manage resides behind a NAT or is hosted in the cloud. While firewall policy changes, port forwarding, or one-to-one address translations could be made to facilitate push deployment of the agent, in many cases it may be far easier to perform a manual deployment of the agent to those hosts.

The Linux Agent can be downloaded from the Orion web interface to the Linux host by going to [Settings -> All Settings -> Agent Settings -> Download Agent Software] and selecting "Linux" from the options provided and clicking "Next". In the following step of the Wizard select "Manual Install" and click "Next". Finally, In the third and final step of the wizard is where you will select the Linux distribution you will be installing the Agent on, as well as bitness of the OS (32 or 64bit). Here you can also configure any advanced options the agent will use when it is installed, such as which polling engine the Agent should be associated with in Agent Initiated (Active) mode, or the listening port the Agent will use when running in Server Initiated (Passive) mode.

Select Agent TypeSelect Deployment MethodChoose Agent Settings & Distribution
Select Agent Type.pngAgent Deployement Type.pngAgent Distribution.png

Once selecting all the appropriate configuration options, click the "Generate Command" button at the bottom of the page. This will generate a dynamic installation command based upon the the settings chosen above, which can then be copied and pasted into an SSH or X-Windows session on the Linux host. The Linux machine will then download and install the appropriate agent software from the Orion server using those pre-configured options.

Copy Install Command.png

Paste the generated command into your Linux terminal session and press 'enter' to start the download and install process.

Console Session Install Agent.pngThe command will begin downloading, then installing the Agent onto the machine. When complete, the agent service will automatically start on the Linux host registering with the Orion server, and becoming a managed node.

Mass Deployment - Repository

With the introduction of the Linux Agent in SAM 6.3 Beta 3, the Orion server and Additional Web Servers are now also Linux repositories for the Agent. This method can be utilized for mass Agent deployment using automation and orchestration tools such as Puppet and Chef. It also means you can use the same native built-in  package management tools for the Agent, as you would any other package on the Linux operating system. Now you can install the Linux Agent the same way you might install or update BIND or Apache, using 'yum', 'apt-get', or 'zypper' depending upon your distribution. To utilize 'yum', 'apt-get', or 'zypper' for installing the agent you must first register the Orion repository with your operating system. To do so, navigate to [Settings -> All Settings -> Agent Settings -> Download Agent Software -> Linux] and select 'Install via Package Management Tool (e.g. yum, apt)'.

yum.pngBased upon the distribution selected in the drop down (1), a command line string is dynamically generated. Simply click the 'Copy' button (2), then paste this string into an SSH session for the Linux host you want to add the repository to and press 'Enter'. Once the repository is added to the host, you can use the appropriate 'yum', 'apt-get', or  'zypper' command to install the agent from the repository.  Simply click the 'Copy' button (3) and once again, paste this command into the SSH session to install the Agent. The Agent will then be downloaded from the Orion repository and installed on the host.

When installation is complete, all that remains is to configure the agent by typing 'service swiagentd init'. This will bring up the Linux Agent configuration settings where you will need to provide the IP, hostname, or FQDN of the Orion server or Additional Polling Engine (option #2). Then enter your Orion 'admin' or equivalent credentials used to login to the Orion web interface (Options 4 & 5). When complete, save your changes and exit (Option 7). This will then register the agent with the Orion server and begin managing it as a node.

General Windows Service Monitor Template

I am getting the SAM set up for our Servers and I am looking to get the Services monitored.

What is the best way to create a template that can be used on every server? There are several servers that have certain services and others don't. Is there a way to select all the services to be monitored and then when the template is applied to each server that they only monitor the services needed? Also, if there is a new service added to a server, what is the best way to get it added to the monitor template?

Hardware Health monitor issue

Hi

I have a problem with hardware health monitor.

My vcenter added to my NPM 11.5 and SAM 6.2.

One of my esxi server's HDD failed and I recive error and change the HDD .

But problem start after that. Error gone from server ilo and vcenter health monitor but in Solarwinds HDD sensor still failed.

Disable and enable the sensor from SAM was useless.

Even I remove and add specific server again.

There is no error log even in server ilo.

So tell me what should I do?

Can a single File Age Monitor component monitor all files within a folder?

$

Hello,

I have a request from one of our technical teams to monitor all files within a specified folder on a Windows server for any file older than 60 minutes. I haven't used the File Age Monitor in SAM before and I was wondering if one File Age Monitor component would work in this scenario or does the component only monitor a "specific singular" file? Would one File Age monitor within a template configured to the parent folder report back on any file that exceeds the 60 minute threshold?

Thanks,

MC

5 minute polling interval question

$

Hello everyone!

When a poll occurs every 5 minutes (300 seconds) by SW Orion agent on the Windows VM (Win 2012 R2), does this take the average stats (CPU, Memory, Network, etc.) of the previous 299 seconds (approximately) and send this to the Orion server?

I was told by someone that the moment the polling occurs, it only captures the metrics at that moment - which sounds incorrect to me because why ignore the previous 299 seconds and only log the 1 second the poll occurs? What if the CPU was pegged at 100% for 299 seconds and then dropped to 1% at the 300th second when the poll occurred; that would mean that it would have only seen the 1% CPU utilization?  I wouldn't think so.

Please enlighten me on how this works exactly and exactly what is captured during the poll.

Thanks!
