All,
I've been looking at a proper Round Trip E-mail monitor.
By round trip I mean one that sends an e-mail out to an external e-mail address and then gets returned to the originating e-mail address, in this manner both inbound and outbound steps can be checked.
The online help suggests that this can't be done
4. It is not currently possible to use the monitor without SMTP and send the e-mail from the same server the monitor is running on via MAPI.
and requires an SMTP server (which I presume is external to the organisation) but I would challenge this.
The Technical University Berlin has an e-mail echo facility ( Echo@TU-Berlin.DE ) that will bounce back an e-mail to its source address.
The returned message will include the outbound e-mail headers making it easy to trace any pinch points and you already have the the inbound ones
Thoughts/comments welcome.
