Phantom Child Status

I have a number of nodes that are showing a child status of "One or more application monitors is in an Unknown state." that have no application monitors even assigned to them.  I've gone into the database enough to update the nodes table to try to correct this, but within a couple of polls the status returns.  These nodes have not had applciation monitors assigned to them so I'm curious as to why they are reporting this way.  I hesitate to go into the NodeChildStatus table and start polling rows of data out of there if there's another way to solve this.  I'm also not going to delete and re-add the node as I want to keep the historical data.  What gives with the phantom status?  Has anyone else had this occur before?  What solution were you able to find?
