Application monitors and group dependencies

This may be an odd situation, but I am having some issues with adding some dependencies on some application monitors I have.

We have a server that we run a number of number of application monitors on and the application monitors are attached to the node for this server. These application monitors can be impacted by another remote server being down, which there is also a node for. What I want to do is be able to make the application monitors dependent on that remote server so that when it goes down we don't trigger a large number of alerts.

I found that this works if I create a dependency with the remote server as the parent and a single application monitor as the child. The application monitor properly went to unreachable status when the remote server went down.

The issue is, we have a large number of application monitors so I want to be able to put them in groups and make the group dependent on the remote server. I found that when I try this, the dependency does not take effect. I tried both manually adding applications to the group and dynamically adding them to the group, it did not work either way.

Does anyone have any idea what may be the issue here? Are application dependencies supposed to be able to work in groups?

I am currently running NPM 11.0.1 and SAM 6.1.1.

Renamed Exchange Databases

We've recently been going through restructuring our Exchange 2010 databases, and part of that has involved renaming all of them.  I'm having a problem now where SAM is still showing the old database name in some locations, but not all.

This is from the AppInsight for Exchange view for one server under the Mailbox Database Status, showing the new database names

db01.PNG

If I look at the Users By % Mailbox Quota Used, for example, it shows me the old database names.  In this view, DB-500MB-05 should really say DB-05; DB-01GB-01 should really say DB-21; DB-500MB-03 should be DB-03, etc...

db02.PNG

If choose DB-01 from the Mailbox Database Status section, it takes me to the info for that DB, but shows me the old name for it:  db03.PNG

The old DB names are not showing everywhere, as those two screenshots show.  It seems that any view where the DB is the main piece of info (Mailbox Database Status, Mailbox Database Copies, etc) it shows the new name, but where the DB is just an additional piece of info in the view (Users by Mailbox Size, Users by Messages Sent, etc), it is showing the old name.  How can I get this corrected?

Sorry, New to this

Hi All,

Sorry im new to SolarWinds and am struggling to find confirmation on what the user account requirements are for monitoring active directory.

I keep seeing references to "must be an adminstrator on the domain controller" well that would make it a Domain Admin.  Is this right? is that the minimum permissions I can give to monitor AD.

If not can someone please point me to a technical reference of the permission required?

Any help greatly appreciated

Work Instructions On A Device

I am new to Solarwinds, but I am trying to connect our work instructions to devices so they will be included in the email.

Is there a variable field that we can tie hyperlinks to devices that will be included in an email if we lose connectivity to the device or if it exceeds its threshold?

Example:

Would you watch a SolarWinds reality TV show?

Before you answer, consider the reality shows out there already:

  • Duck Dynasty
  • Honey Boo-Boo
  • Storage Wars
  • Swamp People
  • Ice Road Truckers
  • Finding Bigfoot
  • Ax Men

After interacting with all of my co-workers and product users, I realized that the software development process can be...entertaining, to say the least. Trust me, if you're a geek, there are some strange characters here, especially me. I would watch religiously. Be great marketing too. We can name it something slick like, "Developers," or "Thwack Men."

At least you wouldn't lose IQ points by watching our show. (Although, I must confess that I have watched the other shows I've listed...and screamed in agony from time to time.)

(Hey, my thwack snuggie went from dream to reality!)

Appinsight with Exchange 2013 - Unknown Status

I am having an issue where exchange 2013 servers show as unknown status with the application monitor. It seems to be an issue with 'Average Document Indexing Time ' counter monitor not being found. In the PDF is says that this is only for exchange 2010, but there doesn't seem to be a way to remove this component from the monitor.

Thank you in advance.

Port Monitor every 5 seconds

$

What kind of an impact, if any, on the server if I monitored 3 different TCP ports every 5 seconds on 4 different nodes? We have 2 clusters of 2 servers and if they dont hear from each other every 10 seconds they will both fail over and try to become master causing issues. 1 server in each cluster is off site. We have no other way to check if there was a failure between the 2 until users complain.

Thanks!

Advanced Alerts sending multiple alert e-mail messages

$

I've been setting up e-mail alerts for our various applications and I've run into a situation I can't figure out.

I have an alert that is set up to watch an application, and alert if it enters a 'critical' state. I currently have the application in that stat on a server, so I can test it's real functionality.

The application monitor is set up performance counter monitor that monitors the application, and goes critical when the application exceeds 120MB. There is also a process monitor set up to watch the executable in the process list and go critical if the process goes over 90% CPU usage, and provide a status of 'down' if the application is not running.

These alerts are working fine within Solarwinds, but the alert e-mails are what I can't figure out.

I have the alert set to trigger when the node is 'not equal to' 'down', the application name is equal to the name of the application, and the component availability is equal to Critical.

In the Trigger actions, I have two actions.

The first is as follows:

NetperfMon Event Log:

Message to send to NPM Log:

NetPerMon Event Log:  Component  ${N=SwisEntity;M=ComponentAlert.ComponentName} on Application ${N=SwisEntity;M=Application.ApplicationAlert.ApplicationName} on Node ${N=SwisEntity;M=Application.Node.Caption} is ${N=SwisEntity;M=ComponentAlert.ComponentAvailability} with status: ${N=SwisEntity;M=ComponentAlert.StatusOrErrorDescription}

The second action is the send E-Mail/Page alert.

In the e-mail setup, I have:

Subject:

Alert: MonitoredApp on ${N=SwisEntity;M=Application.Node.Caption} is critical.

Message:

MonitoredApp on ${N=SwisEntity;M=Application.Node.Caption} is critical:

CPU Usage: ${N=SwisEntity;M=ComponentAlert.PercentCPU}%
Memory Usage: ${N=SwisEntity;M=ComponentAlert.StatisticData}MB
Date: ${N=Generic;M=DateTime;F=DateTime}

I want the 'CPU usage line to read the APPLICATION'S CPU usage, not the server's overall CPU usage, so that line may be wrong for what I'm looking to do.

What I get is two messages. Both have identical subjects, but the content is slightly different.

The first comes through as

MonitoredApp on Servername is critical:

CPU Usage: %

Memory Usage: 202.92578125MB

Date: Thursday, May 21, 2015 4:17 PM

The second comes through as:

MonitoredApp on Servername is critical:

CPU Usage: 0%

Memory Usage: MB

Date: Thursday, May 21, 2015 4:17 PM

Does anyone have any idea why the single alert is sending the two separate, incomplete messages, and how I night fix it so it sends one e-mail with all the information?

Thanks

SAM 6.2 Exchange 2010 Database Copies

$

We recently upgraded to SAM 6.2 and I noticed that the appinsight does not show any database copies on mailbox servers. If I check the mailbox database status, copies and size it shows nothing there. It does show a mounted database that isn't part of the DAG, but not a copy on the mailbox server.  I have re-applied appinsight and verified that the tests pass so there are no errors with any of the components that I can tell. Has anyone else run into this?

Stop alerting on a stopped service

$

Hi all.  I'm very, very new to Solarwinds so I may have some silly questions.  I'm inheriting an instance of Orion (NCM, MPM, SAM) and we're using application templates to monitor our exchange servers.  However, we have services on exchange services that are intentionally stopped (POP, IMAP, etc) but we keep receiving alerts about these services being stopped.  how do I suppress these alerts?  We've disabled the service in the template

CPU alerts - Top 10 processes display stats post failure

$

I have the Alert Escalation set to 1 minute after the alert and it appears to be too slow to gather the data at the time of failure (total in value is that of a normal processing system). If I use a program to peg a CPU, the top 10 processes add up in the alert email. The Trigger Condition is set to 5 minutes. What are my options?

Confused about the New Version of SAM (6.2.1)

$

Hi,

From the release note of SAM it says that "When upgrading to SAM 6.2.1, NPM must first be upgraded to version 11.5.2. Once NPM has been upgraded, you will receive a notification that SAM alerts have failed to migrate successfully. SAM will correctly convert these alerts once it has been upgraded to version 6.2.1." However, upon checking the "Compatibility of SolarWinds Orion Products for Installation and Upgrade" it stated that this version is supported from the NPM version of 11.5.x and didn't specify that 11.5.2 version.

This can be the results of incompatibility issue during upgrade if this new version is only supported the version 11.5.2 of NPM module. Some of the users/ implementers are only checking the Compatibility SolarWinds Orion Products since all of the Modules are in there.

Alert if service bounces multiple times?

I've received a request to monitor for and create an alert if a service bounces more than a certain number of times in a given period (say, 3 times in a week, for example).

Is there a way to do this, and if so, how?

Need to play a sound on down Alert.

Hi Team,

I need steps so that we can play a sound if I get down alert.

We monitor the alerts using web console on big screens.

We get emails too however we need the console to play the sound on down alerts.
